The day began with the familiar rituals: big breakfast and a steaming cup of coffee. We whipped up a homemade lunch to fuel along the adventure-filled hike. With backpacks loaded and a second coffee infusion, we set the stage for a day filled with exciting nature discoveries.
Unforeseen Delays and a Change of Plans
Our hike had an unexpected twist right from the start. Despite meticulous planning, we missed our train connections. Part 1: From Höör to Bjeverö
Through the City Streets of Höör
Leaving the train station of Höör behind, our first steps led us through the vibrant streets of Höör. With backpacks slung over our shoulders, we strolled through the heart of the town, eager to leave the urban landscape behind and and in no time, we found ourselves in the city’s outskirt. A boulevard loomed on the horizon, but just as quickly as it appeared, with a right turn a meadow unfolded before us and we were already where we wanted to be. A pathway outlined by tiny stones opened up and we followed it for some time.
Through the Pine and Spruce Forest
A stretch of the hike took us through a mesmerizing pine and spruce forest. Tall trees stood sentinel on either side, while the forest floor transformed into a lush carpet of green moss and grass, decorated with pine cones, fallen branches, and mushrooms of every kind and size. From time to time, we spotted also birdwatching towers, but at that time we couldn’t see or hear any birds nearby. The quiet was broken only by our sighing, and we found ourselves repeatedly pausing to capture the moment with the camera.
A Late Lunch Break
After about 10km of hiking through picturesque pathways, the path took a turn and we found ourselves on an asphalt road. But it wasn’t long before the marking of the SL3 pointed towards a meadow. We were at Bjeveröd, the first milestone of our hike. We immediatelly saw the picturesque and tranquil dam. Fishermen patiently cast their fishing rods into the waters, while we took the opportunity to indulge in a well-deserved lunch break. A table with benches, camping spots and BBQ sites, this was the perfect time for a rest. Falafel, hummus, fresh vegetables, and a fresh bread from the morning recharged our batteries as we had a beautiful view over the water and green field around us.

The Second Stretch: From Bjeveröd to Ekeröd
With our bellies full and energy renewed, we set forth on the second part of our hike. The path from Bjeveröd to Ekeröd promised an intermediate challenge as there were more hilly stretches and more narrow paths, with more turns and twists. We embraced it with open arms. A wooden-planked bridge led us along the river, soaking in the chill vibes of its gentle flow right by our side.
Of Birds and Picturesque Pathways
As we hiked along this wooden crafted bridge, the plot thickened- right there on a fallen tree, an unexpected bird stole the spotlight. From the distance, a bird, slightly larger than a goose or duck, with a very long beak was quietly standing. It wasn’t shy at all. In fact, it was more curious than cautious as it kept looking at us. As we stood and admired it, a duo of hikers, a friendly Swedish old couple, stopped to share the moment with us. With stories as rich as the forest itself, they told us that it was a “skarvar” or cormorant in English and in fact, it might be a young bird as it didn’t have the white feathers on its chest and neck. We spent good 15 minutes with the bird and Swedish couple before venturing further on the fairytale wooden bridge.
Diverse Landscapes: Challenges and Joyous Moments
As we soaked in the beautiful views walking along the wooden bridge, orange marking of SL3 made us to shift gears, leading us to yet another different lanscape of the trail. Embracing this change of course, we found ourselves treading on a narrow trail, studded with rocks, branches, and gnarly roots. It was like stepping into an untouched world. We were again spotting a palette of mushrooms with different sizes and colors.
Twists and Turns
As we navigated the labyrinth of turns and twists of SL3 route, this second part of the hike kept us on our toes. There were no long straight paths here, and the route was a mix of more wooden bridges, narrow pathways, beech and pine forests. Our path took us over fallen trees, through meadows, and under hanging branches. The forest was a symphony of colors and textures. The challenges we faced – steep inclines, and stretches through meadows with no shades. But these only added to the thrill of this hike.
Changing Landscapes
Changing Landscapes
As we followed the well-marked route, it started revealing sections where timber had been collected on the sides of the road. After passing through a meadow where the air felt warmer than usual, the forest soon enveloped us once again, meandering through tall linden and birch trees. The ground beneath our feet transformed into a lush carpet of green grass and moss, reminding us of the trail’s first part. Leaving behind the forest’s embrace, we found ourselves traversing an asphalt road once again, this time beneath the soothing shadow of trees.
Cow Farms
As we pressed on, we encountered a small village with many cow farms. A herd of curious cows were standing close to the road, casually snacking on grass or mooing loudly. But just as we were getting accustomed to the change, the trail led us back to its roots – forest pathways that weaved through woodlands. Sunlight filtered through the branches, casting a beautiful glow upon the trail. It was a moment worth savoring.
Last Stretch of the Hike
Our steps led us back and forth between asphalt and forest pathways, but this ever-changing character of the trail made it even more interesting and exciting to explore further. With each turn, we approached our final stretch, an excitement building with the distant sounds of bustling boulevards and fast-driving cars. At this point we were happy to hear the sound of cars, as we started feeling a tad of fatigue. Believing the bus station was on the other side of the bustling boulevard, we made our way through the hustle passing through two roundabouts and a bridge over the busy boulevard, only to discover that the bus heading in our direction was headed elsewhere – a classic mix-up that added a dash of frustration over ourselves… and Google Maps. Yet, even in our frustration of missing the right bus stop, we made it on time for the next bus to Malmö.
With the sun setting slowly on the horizon, we completed our exhilarating hike along the Skåneladen SL3 trail, feeling a mixture of exhaustion and exhilaration. From missed trains to unique and beautiful forests and nature, the day had been a whirlwind of surprises. We truly embraced the changing landscapes and challenges that came our way. Despite a few hiccups, like a bus stop mishap, the hike was a true joy of exploration. With tired legs and smiles on the faces, we headed back home, carrying with us the thrills that only a day in the great outdoors can provide.
