Rocks, Cliffs, Coastal views and Nature’s Spa: From Mosteiros to Ferraria

Rocks, Cliffs, Coastal views and Nature’s Spa: From Mosteiros to Ferraria

The fourth day of our hiking journey from Mosteiros to Ferraria and back was filled with unexpected twists and turns, making it a memorable and exciting day. Despite the rainy weather, we were determined to make the most of our day, embracing the challenges that lay ahead.

Gearing Up for the Hike

We started the day with a delicious breakfast, satisfying refreshing lemonade and invigorating coffee. Little did we know that this would be the perfect start to a day with many tantrums of the weather. We gathered the supplies for our lunch and with our backpacks filled, we made our way to the catch bus to Mosteiros, from where we would walk about 6km to Termas da Ferraria.

Traditions kept alive: “Espírito Santo” or the Holy Spirit celebrations

During our bus ride, we couldn’t help but notice the unique tradition of bread left on front doors of many houses in the villages we passed through. Intrigued, we later discovered that it was a local custom related to a religious devotion to the Holy Spirit. It is common for households to decorate their homes with colorful flowers and religious symbols. Some families also place bread, typically known as “Bodo de Leite” or “Milk Bread,” at their front doors as a sign of hospitality and generosity. It was fascinating to witness firsthand the rich traditions of the Azorean people.

Rain, Cliffs, and the City of Mosteiros

With raindrops falling gently, we kick-started our journey. Undeterred, we embarked on our trail at around 10 o’clock, venturing along a wide black pathway that snaked its way through the rugged terrain and very close to the coastline. But then the rain started pouring over our poncho raincoats, and the wind speed picked up, while we walked.

Walking alongside the shore, we soon marveled at the majestic sight of Ilhéus dos Mosteiros, towering rocks standing proud against the backdrop of the city. Despite the foggy weather, their presence was breathtaking, evoking a sense of wonder and grandeur. The rain continued intensifying, but at times it was giving us respite to admire the view.

Nature’S SPA: Ferraria’s Thermal Baths from Peak Camarinhas

Legend and Lore around Ilhéus dos Mosteiros

Legend of the small islands speaks of a group of nuns who lived in a convent in Mosteiros. The nuns were known for their devoted and virtuous lives. However, one of the nuns secretly fell in love with a sailor who frequently visited the area. Their forbidden love affair caused great turmoil within the convent. When their relationship was discovered, the nun was banished from the convent, and in her despair, she threw herself into the sea. The rocks of Ilhéus dos Mosteiros are said to be a representation of her petrified form, forever condemned to stand as a reminder of the consequences of forbidden love.

The Nature’s Spa: Ferraria’s Thermal Baths

As we were approaching the thermal baths, our descent led us down a zigzagging asphalt road. Despite the rain’s persistence, we were rewarded with a breathtaking view of people bathing in the natural rock pools below. Undeterred by the rain, we changed into our bathing suits and ventured towards the warm waters. However, to our disappointment, the temperature wasn’t as hot as expected due to the low tide at this time of the day. Nevertheless, we embraced the moment and we dipped our toes into the pool. The experience may not have aligned with our initial plans due to the poor weather and low temperatures, but it was worth it coming all the way to the hot springs.

Refresh and Comfort

With our clothes drenched, we decided to seek refuge in the nearby building, where a spa pool filled with the natural thermal waters and massage were possible to enjoy. Lunch became our oasis amidst the rain, and a warm cup of coffee offered comfort and solace. We made attempts to dry our clothes, but the ticking clock reminded us of our impending bus ride back to Ponta Delgada.

Conquering Peaks and Drenched Roads

As if answering our wishes, the rain ceased, revealing a window of opportunity to go back to Mosteiros. Determined to make the most of our time, we embarked on a climb to Pico do Camarinhas on the way back. Surrounded by dense trees and climbing on a path crafted like natural steps, the ascent gifted us with a breathtaking panoramic view. Through binoculars, we marveled at the intricate details until other trekkers like us joined us, sharing the splendor.

Homeward Bound

Relieved of our raincoats, we descended back to the black road, retracing our steps to the bus stop in Mosteiros. The journey back to Ponta Delgada was a moment of reflection, reliving the challenges, surprises, and breathtaking views we encountered throughout the day. Despite the weather’s tantrums and the inability to dive into the inviting waters, we realized that it was the journey itself that held the true essence of adventure.

As we reflect on our eventful fourth day of hiking, we are reminded that the best adventures often emerge from unexpected moments and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. We reflected on the experiences, and allowed ourselves to relax and unwind. The rain had drenched us, but it couldn’t dampen our spirits. Again, we concluded another fulfilling day of hiking, and with eager hearts, we awaited the mysteries that tomorrow will unveil as we continue our Azorean escapade.
