Hiking the Skåneladen SL5 Trail from Helsingborg to Landskrona

Hiking the Skåneladen SL5 Trail from Helsingborg to Landskrona

Saturday finally arrived, the day we had been dreaming about all week. With excitement bubbling within us, we made the bold decision to tackle the coastal route from Helsingborg to Landskrona along the Skåneladen SL5 Trail. Our journey was set, with Rydebäck as our first waypoint and Landskrona Citadel as the ultimate destination. This hike became a symphony of urban streets and coastal retreats, but also turned into another personal record of covered distance within a day.

The start of the hike was at Helsingborg, and this picture offers a glimpse towards the city

Urban Escapade and A Caffeine Jolt

As the clock struck 9:30 AM, we boarded the train, our hearts racing with the thrill of a new hike soon to begin. Helsingborg greeted us with open arms, and we wasted no time in seeking out the comfort of a coffee shop. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the air as we sipped our steaming cups, shaking off the remnants of sleepy mood from our train ride. With caffeine coursing through our veins, we passed through the heart of the city, looking for the first SL5 orange trail markings. Our hike was planned to be a thrilling fusion of two stages of the SL5 trail: the initial leg from Helsingborg to Rydebäck and the second stage from Rydebäck to Landskrona Citadel.

A Serenade of Landscapes… and Sheep

Part 1: From Helsingborg to Rydebäck

Parks, Pavements, and an Urban Oasis

The city streets led us to a sprawling park, the first taste of greenery on our urban first stage of the hike. The sun painted the sky a brilliant blue as we wandered through the cozy streets of the sweedish town of Helsingborg. Not long after, we found respite from the warm city streets in the embrace of Närlunda park, a true gem nestled beside a beautiful lake occupied by ducks and fish. But alas, the park’s allure was fleeting, as we once again ventured into the cityscape, our spirits unfazed by the heat. It wasn’t long before another park welcomed us, Ramlösa Brunnspark, providing a refreshing atmosphere along the river’s edge. As we walked on the dusty pathway or crossed woden planked brigdges, at the end of the park we had a glimpse into the city’s storied past through displayed vintage photographs. As we learnt later, apart from Christmas, midsummer is the most important holiday in the Swedish calendar and in this park they made sure to celebrate this properly.

Parks, Riverbanks, and the Whispers of History

After following the park pathway with plenty of shade, we reentered urban surroundings before discovering a new area filled with residential houses and a vast green park, Ättekulla, where an unexpected historical surprise awaited. There were a number of grave mounds in the Råå River Valley, with some dating back to the Bronze Age or even longer before from the Neolithic (late Stone Age) era. This was as poignant reminders of bygone eras amid the modern landscape.

A Serenade of Landscapes… and Sheep

After a while we found ourselves passing close to the river, which was a delightful shift in scenery after a familiar urban stroll and even crossing of railways. This stretch of the route we will remember with both the picturesque summer houses on one side and the playful and loudly bleating sheep on the other. Among them, one sheep came even very close to the fence and wanted to be pet. Amidst patches of sunlight and shade, the journey continued past residential pockets, leading us towards Örby Park. This park’s pathway led us through lush grass sections that eventually transformed into a wooden planked trail, creating a fine contrast to the previous surroundings. The tantalizing scent of the sea teased us as we neared the end of the park, and finally, the coastline revealed itself – a majestic expanse of blue and a haven for beachgoers.

A Seaside Lunch: Feasting with a View

As we bid adieu to Örby Park, we found ourselves at the cusp of the coastline, marking the culmination of a 12-kilometer hike by foot. It was around 3 pm, and the sun’s intensity was matched only by our rumbling stomachs and wearied spirits. The relentless heat (yes, it was 26 °C that day!) made the final stretch more challenging, with an absence of shade that stretched as far as the eye could see. However, amidst this coastal landscape, a refreshing sea breeze offered solace. Our eyes feasted on a picturesque port for boats and an expansive beach, complete with inviting benches and tables. But our priority was finding shelter from the sun’s rays. We pressed on until we found the perfect spot for lunch. Underneath a tree’s protective canopy, we savored a meal of vegetables, olives, avocado and hummus, with a loaf of bread- we had a scenic feast by the sea.

Part 2: From Rydebäck to Landskrona Citadel
Coastal Beauty

After a refreshing 30 minute break, we were ready to tackle the rest of the trail’s first leg and embark on the next exciting stage. The sun was relentless , but we were rewarded with view towards a vibrant coastline, where beachgoers, cyclists, and runners enjoyed the day too. There were serene and picturesque ports extending into the Baltic sea waters, creating a lively atmosphere. The waters were shallow and the sunrays were diffracted beautifully. We seamlessly transitioned to the second stage into the Glumslöv park, where charming houses with beautiful gardens and frontyards framed our path. The distant land in the sea, that we initially thought to be Danish, was actually the captivating island of Ven. Its presence, boosted by boats and cruise ships, were creating a beautiful coastal view not only for us but for Cormorant birds standing on the sea rocks.

The Island of Ven

Ven, except for its beautiful nature, has a rich history and it used to be a trading hub during the Viking Age. The island gained fame also as the site of Tycho Brahe’s 16th-century observatory, which played a pivotal role in shaping modern astronomy through his groundbreaking observations. And the most interesting fact of all is that the island is known the many breweries: the locals produce a variety of beers that are just as good reason to visit the island.

Coastal Views

Our trail unfolded along the mesmerizing coastal line, punctuated by captivating sights. At a juncture, we veered slightly away from the coast, tracing a path atop a cliff adorned with lush greenery. As we gazed downwards, there was a serene lake bordered by a thin strip of land, separating it from the sea water. Returning to the coastline, we saw beautiful cliffs that made a stunning backdrop against the sea waters. This stretch was a dynamic blend of ascents and descents, some involving wooden staircases that guided us through changing landscapes.

The Charming Village Ålabodarna

As our footsteps led us forward, we ventured through the charming village of Ålabodarna, where beautiful houses and a bustling port added a touch of coastal vibe to our trail. The warm sun and invigorating pace made our water supplies run low, but we found a small ice cream shop and stocked on more water. Moving ahead, we encountered more beachgoers basking in the sun, soaking in the beach day vibes. The trail led us through a transformational panorama: while the Baltic Sea remained steadfast on our right, the left side unfolded with a shifting landscapes of crop fields, green forests, and quaint residences.

Cows, Accidents, and Climbing

One memorable stretch of our journey led us through a picturesque field where curious cows grazed peacefully. As we paused to capture the scene, a lighthearted mishap happened, and I found myself tumbling to the ground, and discovered that I am with grass-stained knees. We laughed it out and undeterred, we pressed on, ascending to face our first challenge: a series of steep wooden stairs. While their appearance momentarily daunted us due to fatigue and a lack of shade, we managed at the end to get on top without so much efforts.

Beautiful cows and vast fields

A Triumph at the citadel

A Nudist Beach and More Coastal Views

However, the path had one more surprise in store – a nudist beach, an unexpected twist of our hike. With grins on our faces, we walked past this unconventional sight, our cameras kept safely aside. As we continued along the trail, the path ventured closer to the water’s edge, passing by the Lil Olas Park and the lively Borstahusen Camping site. Amidst laughter and leisure, people enjoyed the sandy shores, had BBQ and snacks, and even there was even a place for kayak renting and adventures. Progressing onwards, the island of Ven lingered on our right, but our focus shifted to the water tower in Landskrona and the beacon of our final destination, the Citadel. As our legs wearied from surpassing our previous 27-kilometer record, the prospect of completing the stage spurred our determination.

Triumph at the Citadel

A symbol of our journey’s end, the Citadel promised a little rest and accomplishment. Ducks glided across the citadel’s star-shaped lake. This distinctive layout was a common defensive strategy in the 16th and 17th centuries, providing multiple angles for cannons to defend against potential attackers. Yes, we could see plenty of canons placed atop the small hills. We breathed in deeply, the sense of achievement washing over us as we circled the citadel’s courtyard.

Homeward Bound with Dreams Anew

The hike may have ended, but our spirits soared with the realization that we had set a new record. Tired yet fulfilled, we boarded the train at Landskrona station, weary bodies finding comfort in the thought of rest ahead. The promise of a relaxing weekend lay ahead, but beyond that, an 11-day adventure awaited us on Portugal’s Fisherman trail the week after. With each hike over the last few months, we had prepared ourselves for the challenges ahead.

Embarking on a vibrant trail, we combined two stages of the Skåneladen SL5 trail, tracing our path from Helsingborg to Landskrona. The trail led us through diverse landscapes, from urban streets to tranquil parks, cliffside views to captivating beaches. Along the way, we embraced the coastal charm, culminating in a triumphant arrival at the Landskrona citadel. We would be looking forward to completing another stage of the 42 kilometers long Skåneladen SL5 trail.
