Hiking in Mallorca: A Loop Hike from Cuber to the Peaks of Rateta, Franquesa, and l’Ofre
Our adventure on the fourth day in Mallorca began with an early rise at 7:30 am after a much-needed proper night’s sleep. We had a hearty breakfast, quickly packed our gear, and made a brief stop at Lidl to pick up bread, guacamole, and cucumbers for lunch. Then, we drove about an hour and a half to our trailhead. As we passed through the town of Inca, we were surprised by its size, much larger than we had imagined.
Driving further, we wound our way up the steep, zigzagging roads of the Tramuntana mountains, finally reaching Lake Cuber, our starting point. Nearby, the stunning blue waters of Lake Gorg Blau caught our eye, living up to its name. We were so excited for yet another day of hiking in Mallorca.
Reservoir Cuber and behind it,Puig Major, the highest peak in Tramuntana Mallorca
Around Lake Cuber
Our hike commenced with a gentle, flat path around the reservoir Cuber. The tranquility of the morning was palpable, with no one else around. At the end of the lake, which we realized was actually a dam, we turned left and began our steep ascent towards the first peak, Rateta. The initial climb was tricky, with small, slippery rocks requiring careful footing. We encountered a couple heading in the opposite direction, and then continued our journey upwards, first following a pipe from the dam, then diverting onto a steeper path.
Ascending Rateta
The path to Rateta was challenging, with rocky terrain making the air feel even hotter despite occasional patches of shade from trees. We accidentally took a detour but quickly corrected our course. Following blue trail markers and piles of rocks, we navigated the rocky ascent, our attention focused on each step. As we climbed higher, the breathtaking views of surrounding mountains, some covered in grey rocks and stones and others green trees, began to unfold. The final approach to the peak involved a zigzagging path on the mountain’s edge, leading us to a verdant slope before we reached the summit.
Climbing Rateta, Franquesa and l’Ofre
Reaching the Summit of Rateta
At the summit, we were rewarded with spectacular views of the reservoir Cuber and Gorg Blau, and the valleys below. The summit was rocky, with a few goats passing by, and we had our first encounter with two majestic vultures in Tramuntana. The descent from Rateta was steep and rocky, requiring us to use our hands for stability at times. Carefully and taking our time, we made our way down and then up towards our second peak, Franquesa.
Climbing Franquesa
This section was again challenging, with the wind making it feel refreshing despite the day’s high temperatures. We paused for a lunch break under a nice shade from a tree, enjoying our Lidl-sourced meal with a fantastic view of the peak we had just climbed. We also enjoyed the view of two vultures who were majestically flying in the blue skies. After lunch, we continued our ascent, following a zigzagging, rocky path to Franquesa’s summit. The view from the top was breathtaking, but we soon had to tackle another steep descent.
The Steep Descent to the Third Peak, l’Ofre
The descent from Franquesa was steep and required careful attention, but it wasn’t long before we reached a flatter section with more trees and grass-covered stones. We continued on a well-defined path towards our third peak, l’Ofre, enjoying the shade provided by the trees. After a brief break, we encountered another couple having lunch but pressed on, following a pleasant track to l’Ofre’s summit.

Conquering l’Ofre and the Final Descent
Reaching the top of l’Ofre, we were greeted by stunning views once more. The final descent was treacherous, with slippery earth and stones requiring careful navigation. The terrain transitioned into a forest-like environment, providing a welcome change. We eventually reached a wide, flat path that led us back to the trail loop’s starting point. The path was now marked with the GR221 signs, and it was much easier to follow this markings the the ones leading towards the three peaks. Along the way, we spotted a few more goats and a young couple taking a snack break.
Completing the Loop
As we neared the end of our hike, we were rewarded with views of the three peaks we had conquered, standing proudly side by side. The sense of achievement was immense as we closed the loop and returned to Cuber, where we were greeted by wild goats and a herd of donkeys. Exhausted and sweaty but elated, we drove back to our hotel, enjoying showers to wash away the day’s dirt and sun lotion. We spent a cozy evening watching football and enjoying a nice dinner, already planning our next day’s adventure on the Archduke Trail, where we hoped to see even more vultures.
Our loop hike from Cuber to the peaks of Rateta, Franquesa, and l’Ofre was a challenging yet incredibly rewarding adventure. The breathtaking views, encounters with wildlife, and sense of accomplishment made every difficult step worthwhile. Hiking in Mallorca proved yet again to be full of surprises and positive experiences.
