Hiking in Mallorca East Coast: from Cala Romantica to Cala Varques
Our day’s plan included hiking in Mallorca from Cala Romantica to Cala Varques and exploring the famous Drach Caves. After an early AM wake-up and a quick breakfast, we drove towards Porto Cristo to visit the famous Drach Caves. The 40-minute drive from our hotel took us through Manacor, the birth place of the famous tennis star Rafael Nadal, and not far from Manacor, we easily found free parking as we reached the caves. Tickets cost 18€ (17€ online if purchased online), and as we entered during the firs time slot the caves, we were met with a dense crowd. Despite the crowd, the cave’s beauty shone through, with stunning lakes and canals. A highlight was the amphitheater at the end, where a live orchestra performed on a boat in near-complete darkness. Opting to walk rather than join the rush for the 5 min boat rides to exit the cave, we enjoyed a bit more peaceful exit along the lake. We generally think the cave is worth visiting, but the touristic crowds can feel also very overwhelming (and sometimes disrespectful, especially when they were told not to take pictures during the live performance).

About the Drach Caves
Interestingly, the renowned Drach Caves, a true gem of Mallorca, boast one of the largest underground lakes in the world, Lake Martel, which stretches about 177 meters. As we wandered through the stunning formations of stalactites and stalagmites, we were captivated by the breathtaking natural sculptures created over millions of years. Opened to the public in 1880, the Drach Caves have become a major tourist attraction, allowing to explore their impressive 1,200-meter stretch.

Starting the Hike from Cala Romantica
After our cave adventure, we drove south and parked near Cala Romantica, a picturesque beach with fine golden sand and a narrow bay. We decided on a coastal hike from Cala Romantica to Cala Varques, an out-and-back trail taking about 2 to 2.5 hours. Starting from Cala Romantica, we found a hidden path leading up the rocks surrounding the beach. This path initially took us through a shaded forest, the only significant shade we would encounter until Cala Varques. The gentle ascent and the merging paths eventually led us close to the cliff edge.

Discovering Hidden Gems Along the Coastline
The path, covered in red dust and uneven rocks, required careful footing as we neared Cova de Cala Falco. Here, three concave caves in the rocks made for an interesting sight, even attracting touristic boats for photo ops. Continuing along the cliff edge, we stumbled upon the picturesque Cala Blanc. Although inviting, we didn’t stay long due to the lack of shade. Our route took a brief detour inland, where we encountered goats and a wide path, but we soon returned to the coastal trail.
Cala Varques Cliff Jumping and a Scenic Lunch Break
As we neared Cova Marina del Port, we marveled at its natural rock arch, perfect for walking over it and taking cool pictures. Finally, we glimpsed Cala Varques, a lively beach teeming with boats but devoid of rental umbrellas. Just before reaching Cala Varques, we discovered a more secluded bay with caves perfect for swimming. Adventurous souls climbed and did cliff jumping from the rocks, providing us with an entertaining view as we enjoyed our usual lunch of bread, guacamole, cheese, and cucumbers in a shaded spot.
Return to Cala Romantica and a Relaxing Beach Day
After our break, we retraced our steps back to Cala Romantica, soaking in the stunning views of Mallorca’s east coastline. Once back, we decided to relax on the beach for the rest of the day. A stop at a beach bar for ice lemonade and coffee refreshed us before we found a free umbrella to lounge under. We spent a leisurely afternoon on the beach before heading back home for dinner and a football match from the European Championship to cap off our adventurous day.
