Whit Monday Hiking in Allerød and Strore Dyrehave

Whit Monday Hiking in Allerød and Strore Dyrehave

On a Whit Monday, right after returning from a weekend in Bulgaria, our plans of resting at home and dedicating the day to Easter celebrations took an unexpected turn to an invigorating 20-kilometer hike through the woodlands of Allerød and Store Dyrehave. The call of the outdoor, coupled with the promise of good May weather, prompted a spontaneous decision. Quickly packing our bags and picking up salad bowls for a lunch, we embarked on an impromptu adventure.

A Spontaneous Escape

Fresh from a short weekend trip to Bulgaria and arriving back late in the evening, the thought of hiking was far from our minds. Yet, as the morning sun showed through the curtains of our room, we knew the day held a promise of something else than staying home. With little planning, fueled by excitement and the scent of adventure, we set off to Allerød station.

A Few Moments From Allerød Station

Our hike began just a few steps from Allerød station. The well-marked pathways brought us deeper into the heart of Tokkekøb Hegn, leaving behind the hustle and bustle. As we strolled along the trail, we found ourselves captivated by the beautiful sights and sounds that surrounded us. The gentle rustle of leaves and the warm rays of sunlight filtering through the tree branches with the birdsong created the best starting scene for this hike.

Store Dyrehave: a Star-Shaped Paradise

The pathway led us further to Store Dyrehave, separated from Allerød forest only by a small road. The Store Dyrehave is a great park for anyone looking for either a leisurly stroll, mountain biking or treasure hunting, as it offers lots of activities and experiences. Eight forest paths are laid, radiating outward from the centre like a star. It turns out that the path system was founded in 17th century by King Christian V for hunting purposes and today has gained a UNESCO World Heritage Site status. As we wandered in the forest, we kept our eyes open for both deer and fallow deer. However there are no more red deer which were hunted back in 17th century. From the feathered friends, we spotted the black woodpecker, the chaffinch and robin bird and many others. The absence of rural areas and the prevalence of forest pathways created an atmosphere, allowing us to disconnect from the outside world and fully immerse ourselves in forest’s embrace.

Calming Green

Rest and Regeneration in the Midst of Breathtaking Serenity

Throughout our hike, we discovered numerous idyllic spots perfect for relax and rest. In Allerød forest, nestled by small lakes and tall trees, we found the perfect spot for lunch. The place we chose is also a place where you could decide also to enjoy a grilled feast amidst the forest by setting up a BBQ. Another place in Allerød forest offered an open air tent with an wooden roof and a “pizza-style” oven next to it with a possibility to buy for a small price pre-chopped wood. It is definitely a delightful place to enjoy a grilled meal and enjoy the crackling of the fire in the oven.

Recharging the Batteries

Our hike was not without its challenges. Ironically, I embarked on this hike slightly under the weather. Yet, my unwavering determination and willingness to conquer and explore every kilometer of the hike, propelled me forward. This was only a testament to my high spirits and curiosity to explore.

Thrilling Trails: Mountain Biking Adventures

Enthusiasts can also find an added thrill in the possibility of mountain biking. The forest near Allerød and Store Dyrehave offer a network of trails that cater to riders of all levels, from leisurely biking to adrenaline-seeking daredevils. We stumbled upon trails marked with red circles, indicating their challenging level and for those willing to embrace the adrenaline rush. Whether you’re a seasoned mountain biker or a curious beginner, the forest trails await, ready to provide a great experience.

Our 20-kilometer hike through Allerød and Store Dyrehave offered a captivating escape into the heart of Sjælland. With its accessible and diverse pathways, captivating wildlife, and resting spots, this scenic route invites all nature enthusiasts to embark on their own unique adventure. The forest neat Allerød also holds a special place in my heart as it the home to a great friend and colleague of mine, and I can truly recommend trying this trek.
