From Forests to Shores: Tales of Love, Lakes and Lush Landscapes

In this picturesque 18 km hike, we set off from the train station in Kvistgård, ready to explore the stunning landscapes from the heart of the forest to the serene shores of Hornbæk Beach in Sjælland. Our hike, although not without its challenges, rewarded us with breathtaking views, encounters with deers and falcons to name a few, and a sense of accomplishment.
A City Slog and a Long-Waited Forest Entry
Our hike kicked off through the small streets of Kvistgård, followed by a stretch along a boulevard where cars drove past. While it wasn’t the most ideal start, we had no other option in the area. So if you are taking this route, beware of the bustling streets and traffic. Upon entering the forest through a not really well-visible pathway, we had to maneuverer through a maze of tangled branches before setting off a path that appeared to be just recently carved by a large truck. This initially disrupted the natural surroundings, with demolished trees and high grass. However, as we continued deeper, the forest began to regain its tranquillity, and we even encountered a few mountain bikers along the way.

A Serene Forest Path
After crossing a road, the forest path just opened for us on the other side. To our surprise, we found ourselves enveloped in a serene nature, with no one else in sight. It was a rare opportunity to reflect on your thoughts, so neither me or Ilian said anything on this part of the hike. We then crossed through Gurre Vang forest, where small villas and horses added to the scenic beauty. An interesting fact about Gurre Lake is that it is associated with tales of romance and tragedy.
The legend of Gurre Lake: Love and Tragedy
Gurre Lake is believed to be the setting for the tragic love story of King Valdemar IV and his beloved Tove. King Valdemar IV was deeply in love with Tove, a beautiful maiden. However, their love was forbidden, due to their differing social statuses. Despite the obstacles, the couple continued their secret affair, meeting at Gurre Castle near the lake.
When Tove died under mysterious circumstances, overwhelmed with grief, King Valdemar IV is said to have roamed the castle grounds, haunted by the memory of his lost love. Legend has it that his ghost, along with the spirits of his knights, can still be seen and heard in the vicinity of Gurre Lake, especially during the night of the full moon.

Where the pilgrims go
The Pilgrim Route and a Tranquil Lake
During our hike, we also came crossed the paths of the pilgrims route. It was fascinating to learn that this historic trail passes through Gurre, ultimately culminating at the famous St. Olaf’s church in the charming town of Helsingør. Continuing our hike, we discovered a perfect spot near the lake of Gurre, a bench and a captivating view, and no one around. The wind created gentle waves on the water’s surface as we enjoyed our lunch.
The Yellow Markings and Wildlife Encounters
Resuming our journey after a lunch break, we continued along the lake shore. The path was adorned with amusing little markings—yellow circles, transformed into comical drawings with faces resembling emojis. It brought a smile on our faces and made the hike whimsical. We continued towards Risby Vang forest, where we saw an array of wildlife. Falcons soared overhead, while snakes and forest mice scurried amidst the branches. We even caught a glimpse of elusive deer and a cheeky squirrel.
To the Beach!
As our adventure neared its end, we crossed through the charming town of Hornbæk, marveling at the exquisite villas that were on the side of our route. A notable highlight was the grand lake nestled in the heart of the city of Horneby. Finally, we arrived at Hornbæk Beach, a true gem of the Danish coastline. With its rolling hills, lush green bushes, and vibrant purple flowers, the beach offered a postcard-worthy panorama. The sight of the blue ocean stretching towards the horizon, with a hint of Swedish territory in the distance, filled us with awe and contentment after crossing the sandy hills. We spent a blissful hour in the sun, listening to the rhythmic sounds of the waves crashing against the shore. It was a moment of pure bliss and a well-deserved reward for our long hike.
Homeward Bound
Reluctantly leaving the beach behind, we made our way back to Hornbæk Sand Station, where we boarded the train for our return journey. The train ride through the heart of the forest offered a different perspective, allowing us to appreciate the beauty of nature from a unique vantage point. It was a delightful end to an incredible day.
Our hike from Kvistgård to Hornbæk Beach was an adventure filled with ups and downs, both figuratively and literally. From navigating through urban streets to immersing ourselves in the serene forest paths and encountering wildlife, we savored every moment. The breathtaking views of Gurre Lake, the funny markings on the trail, and the tranquility of Hornbæk Beach left an indelible mark on our hearts.
