Boserup Skov: Nature Lover’s Paradise
On a warm and sunny August day, with blue skies and sun’s golden rays, we embarked on a 18km hike through Boserup Skov, a mesmerizing forest located just a stone’s throw away from Roskilde. The forest is part of the Skjoldungernes Land National Park, offering visitors a plethora of endless opportunities for outdoor fun, thrilling trails and breathtaking views.
A Scenic Stroll from Roskilde to Boserup Skov
Our trail commenced at Roskilde train station, where we embarked on a urban path leading us through Byparken, the city park. As we strolled towards the Viking Ship Museum, we were treated to a panoramic view of Roskilde city on one side and the mesmerizing Roskilde fjord on the other. Although the absence of trees along this stretch of the trail made it slightly challenging in this quite warm day, the unrestricted sunlight energized us as we walked.
Majestic Oak Trees and Sunlit Pathways
Continuing along the path, we eagerly entered the enchanting Boserup forest. Majestic oak trees stood proudly, with their branches reaching towards the sky. Rays of sunlight gracefully filtered through the foliage and branches, casting a magical glow upon the forest floor. As we meandered through the forest pathway, we even stumbled upon hidden nooks, perfect for picturesque picnic or just a rest.

Roskilde Fjord and a Wildlife Wonder
During our coastal walk, we caught a glimpse of Ringøen, a small island resembling a ring. This picturesque isle served as a haven for numerous bird species, including swans, seagulls, terns, ducks, waders, and cormorants. As we admired this sanctuary from a distance, we learned that during the birds’ breeding season, it is prohibited to visit the island to ensure their protection. While we did not spot any deer during our hike, they are known to roam the area, adding an element of excitement to future explorations. And as we looked skyward, we were blessed with a remarkable sight—a majestic white-tailed eagle soaring above the treetops.
Lunch Spots and Camping Hideaways
As we ventured deeper into the forest, we discovered numerous idyllic spots for lunch and camping. These secluded areas, nestled away from the main pathways, offered a peaceful respite amidst tall trees. It was the perfect opportunity to recharge and soak in the serenity that surrounded us. We also encountered several camping sites and coastal spots, inviting us to enjoy the summer days with barbecues, sunbathing, and refreshing swims in the Roskilde fjord.
The forest’s Resilience through the ages
Boserup Skov’s Resilience Through the Ages
Boserup Skov holds a captivating history that adds another layer of intrigue to its natural beauty. During the Swedish war in the 1650s, many of the forest’s trees were felled and repurposed for construction and defense. However, in the 1700s, new oak and beech trees were planted, some of which still stand today, boasting an impressive age of over 300 years. Boserup Skov also harbors a botanical treasure that sets it apart from other forests in Denmark. In early spring, the forest becomes a breathtaking tapestry of color, as delicate blue, white, and yellow anemone flowers bloom earlier here than anywhere else in the country. It’s a testament to the unique microclimate and the forest’s natural diversity.
Water Fun
The hiking path closely followed the coastline, granting us magnificent views of the fjord. During this warm and sunny hiking day, we witnessed locals sailing boats, windsurfing, and fishing along the coastline. The forest’s expansive trails catered to both hikers and mountain bikers, with designated pathways for each group. This ensured a harmonious experience for all, allowing us to explore undisturbed while mountain bikers enjoyed their adventurous routes.
Fun for All: Family-Friendly Activities and More
Boserup Skov is a paradise for families with kids. Near the parking lot on Boserupvej, we passed through the Midgårdsormen, a captivating “balance path” constructed from trees and ropes. This delightful obstacle course challenged the children’s balance and flexibility, providing hours of entertainment. The forest also housed several lakes, with the largest one named Dyremose. Ducks gracefully swam in these serene waters, enhancing the natural charm of the surroundings. For dog owners, Boserup Skov offers a dedicated area called Hundeskov, where furry companions can roam freely without a leash. This thoughtful addition ensures that our four-legged friends can partake in the adventure and revel in the wonders of nature alongside us.
A visit to Boserup Skov is a must for nature enthusiasts of all ages. This forest provides a diverse range of activities, from leisurely walks to thrilling biking routes. Its scenic views encompass lush greenery, serene lakes, and inviting beaches, ensuring an unforgettable experience for every visitor. Boserup Skov’s rich wildlife and centuries-old trees, such as oak, beech, and linden, offer a glimpse into the forest’s historical significance. Additionally, the early bloom of blue, white, and yellow anemone flowers in spring serves as a testament to the forest’s unique microclimate.
