A Hike in the Remote Anaga region of Tenerife: From Las Carboneras to Chinamada

A Hike in the Remote Anaga region of Tenerife: From Las Carboneras to Chinamada

Our day commenced with a lack of sleep, again, as both of us found ourselves waking up at 2 am, unable to fall back asleep until around 5. Despite the fatigue, the excitement boiled in us for our hike from Las Carboneras to Chinamada in the remote Anaga National park on Tenerife. With a sense of adventure in our hearts and the promise of breathtaking landscapes ahead, we embarked on a journey that would take us through quaint villages, winding roads, and picturesque views. Little did we know that this day would unfold yet another different landscape on this beautiful island. Join us as we recount the details of our adventure, discovering the hidden natural wonders that awaited us in the heart of Tenerife’s Anaga National Park.

Making Sneaky Sandwiches

A quick breakfast with coffee, pastries, bread and fruits was followed by secret operation – sandwich-making. At the time we didn’t do a proper research for cafes, restaurants or supermarkets in the area to stop and buy lunch for the day. Faced with this obstacle, if one could call it this, with wink and a nod to ourselves, we stashed away some sandwiches in our backpacks, turning this hike into a wallet-friendly Tenerife adventure. We then geared up and left the hotel.

Las Carboneras perched on a hill with cozy little houses

Navigating Tenerife’s Roundabouts and Zigzagging Streets

Driving out of the resort proved slightly challenging with the myriad of roundabouts and zigzagging road network. The island is renowned for its abundance of turns and zigzagging streets. However, after a bit of confusion, we successfully navigated our way to the highway heading east towards Las Carboneras. The highway drive was a treat itself, as we passed by the breathtaking coastal cities and eventually reaching Santa Cruz and La Laguna. A turn onto a narrower pathway, zigzagging and with many turns, covered by a tunnel of trees, transported us to the tiny village of Las Carboneras, perched on a hill with cozy little houses spread around.

Las Carboneras Trail – Rocky Stairs and Breathtaking Views

Our first stop was at the local church, a quaint introduction to Las Carboneras. The trail began with a climb up rocky stairs, rewarding us with panoramic views of the village and a distinct roque emerging from the mountain ridge, resembling a miniature church dome.  Walking along the hillside path, surrounded by vibrant yellow flowers, we couldn’t help but feel like spring was there, despite the calendar showing January 3rd. The fragrant air and picturesque scenery made the hike even more enjoyable.

Chinamada’s Unique Charm

Chinamada’s Unique Charm – Houses Like Caves

Walking down an asphalt road, we zigzagged our way to Chinamada. Luckily, the road was devoid of cars but rich in picturesque charm. Encountering only two fellow hikers, we relished the solitude in the cool, but sunny 18°C weather. We passed by a hidden lunch spot with panoramic views but decided to continue exploring the trail. After yet another turn on the road, we revealed the little village of Chinamada, its slopes resembling a lush green staircase decorated with charming houses.

Fascinating Tidbids about Chinamada

Passing by the village church, we noticed that the rocks had delved section. As it turned out the village has traditional cave dwellings, known as “almogarenes.” Eager to explore, we ventured past the village towards the higher viewpoint and the majestic peak, Aguaide, uncovering the hidden beauty that makes Chinamada a gem nestled in Tenerife’s natural wonders. Apart from that, we learnt later on that the village hosts an annual pilgrimage in honor of San Roque, its patron saint. During this event, the locals gather for religious festivities with msusic and dancing.

Unveiling Panoramas: Roque de Los Pinos and Beyond

As we ascended along Chinamada’s hill’s edge, the majestic Roque de Los Pinos appeared before us, a colossal rock adorned with Canarian pine trees. Beyond, the majestic silhouette of Mount Teide graced the horizon, standing majestically against the canvas of the Tenerife sky. On the opposite side, Chinamada revealed itself amidst cliffs, terraced hills, and a golden field of yellow flowers. The climb to Aguaide’s peak rewarded us with a sprawling view, embracing the town of Punta del Hidalgo and the vast ocean. After soaking in this breathtaking panorama, we retraced our steps to Chinamada. Taking refuge in the shadow of the village church, we enjoyed a well-deserved lunch (the sneaked sandwiches from the morning buffet), surrounded by echoes of the ocean and the song of birds.

An Even More Diverse Landscape

The return journey to Las Carboneras unveiled an even more diverse landscape. Wandering through laurel forests, bushes, and ferns, the picturesque trail offered a dynamic mix of shade and sunlight. The ever-changing scenery provided a welcome contrast to our tired legs from the previous day’s mountain climb to Guajara. Passing a small farm with sheep and chickens, the trail continued its undulating pattern. After another turn on the trail we were in awe from yet another breathtaking viewpoint with ravines, mountain ridges, and a picturesque village on the other side.

Completing the Loop in Las Carboneras

The circular trail concluded with a pathway outlined by big rocks, leading us down to Las Carboneras. Exploring the village square with its beautiful garden and church marked the end of this short yet fulfilling hike. Returning to our hotel, we took a moment to reflect on the day’s adventure by enjoying drinks by the pool and basking in the last rays of sunlight.

Our hike from Las Carboneras to Chinamada unveiled a tapestry of Tenerife’s diverse landscapes, weaving through quaint villages, picturesque roads, and breathtaking viewpoints. From the ascent along the edge of the hill, revealing Roque de Los Pinos and the majestic Mount Teide, to the panoramic views of Chinamada, the ocean, Punta del Hidalgo and terraced hills, each step was a revelation.
