A Casual Sunday: Circular hike from Slagelse to Valbygård
What started as an unplanned adventure turned into a really good day of hiking through the beautiful forests Valbygård spanning west from Slagelse. The day began with a pleasant surprise of sunny weather and not a gloomy rainy weather as we checked the day before. Without a second thought, we hopped on the train and set off to Slagelse.
Exploring the City Center and the Charming Church
After arriving at Slagelse station, we strolled through the charming city center, passing by cozy cafes, local shops, and a beautiful church with a water fountain sculpture of Saint Michael, depicted with wings and a spear while riding a dragon. Interestingly, the church dates back to 13th century and is named after the Saint Michael, who is a warrior angel, leading the battle against evil forces and defeating Satan. Passing the church, the city path led us outside the urban hustle, and to the entrance to the forest.
Ducks and geese leisurely swimming in the lake
A Scenic Lake
As we enetered the forest and a few steps down a hill, we saw a beautiful lake. Ducks and geese swam around, while some visitors were feeding them with bread leftovers. The lake was very close to the boulevard and we could still hear cars and trucks driving fast and loud. To escape this, we continued on the path around the lake and then further to the west, leaving the sounds of cars behind.
A Quiant Shelter Aminds the Forest
Amidst the forest, we discovered a quaint shelter, which we initially mistaken for a deer shelter, but it turned out to be a resting spot for hikers like us. The shelter though looked very pictureque amids the tall trees, so we had a fun photo session with our trusty GoPro, capturing the vibrant greenery surrounding us. We even had fun with the camera and tried some of the tips and tricks we watched on YouTube in a ferm field.

Birdwatching
Continuing westward, we passed through a farm house with a horse peering through the window, and chickens leisurely snacking on the roadside grass. Though we noticed signs indicating a military area, we passed over the sign. As we continued walking on a very flat straight path, we were rewarded with sightings of a woodpecker, a birdwatching tower, and even a majestic falcon soaring through the trees.
Lunchspot in a Meadow and Nysø Lake
Finding the perfect lunch spot in a meadow, we enjoyed salads we had bought along the way. We had falcons serenading us as we ate, but we were not able to see them. After a short lunch break, we continued our leisurely stroll towards Lake of Nysø. The hike remained easy and pleasant, with many mushroom sightings, though we refrained from picking any as we are not familiar with their edibility. While the path didn’t take us too close to the lake, we caught glimpses of its serene beauty through the trees.
Yellow Signs And Turning Back
Our adventurous spirits led us to cross paths with a yellow military signs, but there were no military activities going. So undeterred, we continued knowing we were on the right track. As the sky darkened at this point, and the wind picked up, we picked up our pace to head home before the rain could catch us. The familiar sight of the lake from our starting point with its ducks and geese marked the end of the forest path of our circular hike.
Back to The City
Retracing our steps through the city center, we ended our 21-kilometer hike at the train station. Despite the unplanned nature of our hike, we felt like superheroes, and had a triumph that day as we managed to explore yet another beautiful forest in Sjælland.
Our spontaneous day in the forest Valbygård recharged our spirits, and we returned to our daily lives with renewed energy and fully ready for a new work week at the office. Who knew that a casual Sunday hike would lead us on such a a nice hike through the forests of Valbygård?
