Trekking Amidst the Scorching Sun from Calvi to Pointe De La Revellata
Rising with the early morning sun, we eagerly prepared for an exciting day of hiking. After a hearty breakfast accompanied by a fresh cup of coffee, we set off towards the train station in L’Île-Rousse. Our destination was Calvi, the last stop on the picturesque train route we took every other day during our stay in Corsica, and from where we were determined to make the most of the scenic hike along the island’s breathtaking north coastline towards Revellata.

Arriving in Calvi, we decided to explore the city before starting our hike. We wandered through the vibrant streets lined with local shops offering regional delicacies, wines, souvenirs, and more. The numerous cafes and restaurants enticed us to savor the local flavors, but we were too excited to reach our destination of the day.

Rich History in Calvi
Interestingly, one of the most fascinating facts about Calvi is that it is believed to be the birthplace of the famous explorer Christopher Columbus. Although the exact birthplace of Columbus remains debatable, Calvi proudly claims him as its native. Calvi holds historical significance as it was the site of Napoleon Bonaparte’s first military victory. As we learnt later, only at the age of 25 (in 1794), Napoleon led a successful siege of the Citadel of Calvi, marking an important milestone in his military career.
The Summit of Citadelle de Calvi
Talking about the Citadelle, it is almost impossible not to pass by and visit it. To reach the Citadelle de Calvi, we went through a path paved with cobblestones, staircases, turns, tunnels and narrow streets. The sun beat down relentlessly already before lunch, leaving us yearning for shadow along the way. However, the rewarding panoramic view of Calvi, its bustling port, central beach, and the magnificent Pointe De La Revellata and the lighthouse in the distance at the citadel’s summit was worth all the sweat.
Setting the direction to the Lighthouse
Towards the Lighthouse
Eager to catch a sea breeze and escape the city heat, we paced toward the lighthouse. Walking on dusty roads with limited shade initially, we were soon rewarded with captivating sight of the city and Pointe De La Revellata. Along the way, we discovered idyllic spots to rest and take in the relax along the coastline.
The Challenging Climb
As the sun reached its highest point, our ascent to Pointe De La Revellata began. The intensity of the heat combined with a slight incline made the journey difficult and tiring. Sweat poured from our brows as we trekked the rocky and dusty paths, making us feel like we were placed in an oven without any ventilation. Nevertheless, the magnificent views of the lighthouse and the sparkling sea on our right side propelled us forward.
Reward at the Lighthouse
Our persistance to keep walking in the heat paid off as we finally reached the lighthouse, where a breathtaking panorama unfold before our eyes. Ascending the rocks near the lighthouse, we were treated to an even more enchanting view of the sea and the graceful sailing boats. Calvi, visible in the distance, added even more charm to the panoramic view. Capturing countless photos and relishing the crashing waves below, we enjoyed the beauty surrounding us.
A Cooling Break
Descending from the lighthouse, we sought refuge beneath the shade of a birch tree, taking a moment to soak up our achievement reaching the lighthouse and enjoying a well-deserved lunch. Refreshed and with new energies, we contemplated our return to Calvi, expecting even higher temperatures. Embracing spontaneity, we decided to stop and cool off at various spots along the coastline way. Finnaly, we discovered a rocky enclave by the shore, where the waves gently spilled over the rocks. We embraced the moment to pausing and cool down. As the heat gradually became less intense, we continued on our way back to Calvi, mindful of our water supplies running low at this point.

Upon reaching L’Île-Rousse, we couldn’t resist the temptation to go to the local beach. We carelessly dived again into the cool ocean waters. Finally returning home, we enjoyed a cozy dinner on the balcony, reflecting about the day’s trekking. We were excited to plan our next Corsican hike, eagerly awaiting the wonders that lay ahead.
