A Thrilling Coastal Adventure: Hiking in Relva on the Rocha Da Relva Trail

Our third day on São Miguel, Azores was destined for adventure as we embarked on an invigorating hike along the stunning coastline in Relva. Filled with excitement and armed with a hearty breakfast, we set out to explore this picturesque trail of this captivating island. Little did we know that our hike would not only offer breathtaking views but also unveil the intriguing tales of the land and its vibrant celebrations.

Breakfast Fuel for an Adventurous Day

Despite a slightly restless night’s sleep, we were ready to conquer the day. Our breakfast spread boasted a perfect balance of flavors and nutrients. While I savored a refreshing blend of fruits like local ananas and oranges, my hiking buddy indulged in the classic combination of eggs and bread with cottage cheese. The aroma of coffee, juice, and tangy lemonade straightened our senses, setting the stage for the adventures ahead.

Navigating the Trail’s Start

Eager to get started this trek, we packed our essentials and made our way to the Rocha Da Relva trailhead. As we arrived, our initial path towards the starting point of the trail was interrupted by a river, which was not possible to cross by foot. However, we encounter a kind local couple with two adorable black puppies, who instructed us to retrace our steps and access the trail via the main street. With unexpected generosity, they offered us a lift in their vintage red car, and telling us about their connection to the area and their recent home purchase nearby.

Vineyards, Donkeys, and Nature’s Bounty

Soon after saying goodbye to the kind locals, we found the starting point of this trail. As we ventured deeper into the trail, we discovered a tapestry of vineyards and orchards where locals diligently tended to grapes and fruits. The combination of rich volcanic soils, ample sunshine, and the moderating influence of the surrounding cliffs creates an ideal environment for grape cultivation. Here, we encountered the fascinating intersection of wine production and the island’s rich cultural heritage. Donkeys, integral to traditional farming practices, added an element of charm to the trail. These hardworking animals, once used for transportation and farm labor, now serve as a reminder of the island’s agrarian heritage.

Marveling at the Cliffs and Tales of Ancestors

The formation of the cliffs along the Rocha Da Relva trail tells a captivating geological story. Layer upon layer of rock reveal the passage of time and the forces of nature that shaped this mesmerizing coastline. Along the trail, we encountered thoughtfully placed tales with poignant text, reminding the visitors to reflect on the land’s rich history and honor the ancestors before us.

Celebrations and Festivities

Throughout the year, Relva comes alive with vibrant celebrations that honor the island’s rich cultural heritage. Festivals and gatherings provide an opportunity for the community to come together, united by traditional music, dance, and culinary delights. We were a bit too early (with a month or two) before these festivities, but this is just another reason for us to visit the island and this place again.

The Ocean’s Symphony

Our trail closely paralleled the ocean, granting us a front-row seat to a stunning view of crashing waves against the rugged rocks. This short break allowed us to truly connect with the raw power of nature and get energized to finish the trail. Descending towards the sea, amidst more vineyards and orchards, quaint houses stood as silent witnesses to the island’s agricultural heritage. The trail was mostly to ourselves, but ocassionally motorcycles and even a rider carrying a stack of ten plastic chairs passed by us.

Retracing the Steps and Lunch with a View

Upon reaching the trail’s end, we retraced our steps to the trailhead, but this was not really the end of it. At the trail’s beginning, a new road beckoned, leading us downhill past small houses, vineyards, and a tranquil spot perfect for unwinding and lunch. Amidst the charm of this lunch spot, curious cats shared our company, while a quirky garden adorned with dolls and many colorful things added a touch of whimsy. However, the pesky intrusion of cats, eager for a taste of our meal, accompanied by their hisses, required us to share our lunch. Once we were ready to go back to Relva, our upward climb, challenging yet rewarding, carried us towards new heights. We again triumphed at the end of the trail.

As we reluctantly bid farewell to Relva’s captivating landscapes and the stories etched within its cliffs, we carried with us the ever-lasting memories of our remarkable hike. The Rocha Da Relva trail had not only revealed the breathtaking beauty of the Azores but also connected us to the vibrant spirit of this enchanting island. From the lush vineyards and the endearing presence of donkeys to the majestic cliffs and the celebrations that bring the community together, every step along the trail revealed the island’s vibrant spirit.
