Our hike around Furnas Lake and the indulgence in the therapeutic waters of Terra Nostra Thermal Bath left us with unforgettable memories and a sense of fulfillment. Join us as we relive this exciting hike and delve into the captivating details of our one day long trip.
A Scenic Bus Ride
Our day began with a big breakfast for the upcoming adventure. The taste of freshly squeezed orange juice and the aroma of coffee awakened our senses. Energized and ready to go, we eagerly awaited the arrival of the bus to Furnas. Despite the initial uncertainty, the bus finally arrived full with a vibrant mix of locals and tourists. As we ventured through narrow streets in the villages on our way to Furnas, the bus beeping to signal its passage, we marveled at the verdant landscape, old houses nestled amidst the greenery, and occasional glimpses of cows grazing peacefully.
Foggy Trails and Natural Wonders
Leaving the coastal road behind, our journey toward Furnas Lake took an enchanting turn as a dense fog descended upon us. Disembarking at our destination, we found ourselves on a paved path, with the lake gracefully unfolding on our right. The serenity of the surroundings and the fragrance of the flora elevated our spirits, promising an extraordinary experience ahead.
Along the path, we encountered captivating diversions, such as the opportunity to witness one of the tallest Araucaria trees in the world. We stood in awe of its majestic height, a testament to nature’s grandeur. Further along, a cascading waterfall graced our sight, though its flow was not so strong that day. Nevertheless, it added to the mix of natural wonders we were fortunate to witness.
Hot SPrings AHEAD!
An Unexpected Companion and the Springs of Furnas
Amidst our exploration, a curious cat crossed our path. It decided to join our hike, becoming an amusing companion. We couldn’t help but laugh at the funny sight of a feline adventurer walking behind us. It seemed this furry friend was determined to prove that cats can conquer mountains too! It added an extra dose of joy and playfulness to our already memorable day.
Hot Springs Ahead!
Finally, we reached the hot springs, where the distinct smell of sulfur permeated the air. Despite its pungency, we found it oddly invigorating, a testament to the healing properties of the natural springs. We learned from a knowledgeable guide that a few of the springs had recently merged. Witnessing locals prepare traditional dishes, the so called Cozido, within the springs added an authentic touch to our visit.
Reaching Mirador de Pico: A Rewarding Ascent
Continuing our ascent towards Mirador de Pico, we embarked on a steep and muddy pathway. However, the lush greenery, with its myriad of plants and vibrant vegetation, provided a stunning backdrop to our climb. As the exertion wore on, our perseverance was rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Furnas Lake. The feeling of accomplishment and the sheer beauty laid out before us left us speechless. We took a moment to capture the memory with photographs and indulged in a homemade sandwich as we admired the splendor of nature’s artistry.
Terra Nostra Thermal Bath: A Soothing Retreat
Descending from our vantage point, we made our way back to the lake, where a gentle rain accompanied us. Undeterred, we set off for Terra Nostra Thermal Bath, hoping to find solace in the iron-infused waters. As the rain intensified, we wasted no time in embracing the warm embrace of the thermal bath. The brownish hue of the water, a result of its mineral composition, only added to the mystical ambiance. We soaked away our weariness, enveloped by the therapeutic properties of the bath, finding solace amidst the raindrops.
Our exploration of Furnas Lake and Terra Nostra Thermal Bath on São Miguel proved to be an exhilarating and rewarding adventure. From the scenic bus ride through charming towns to the fog-covered trails, mesmerizing natural wonders, and the soothing embrace of the thermal bath, each moment added a layer of enchantment to our experience. We reveled in the taste of adventure and the intoxicating scent of the Azores, leaving us with lasting memories and a deep appreciation for the island’s extraordinary beauty. As we concluded the day, planning our next adventure in Ponta Delgada, we were filled with anticipation, knowing that our journey had only just begun in this magical archipelago.
