Serenity in Faxe Ledeplads and Vemmetofte
We set out on a hike from Faxe Ledeplads to Vemmetofte and back, a truly thrilling trek through picturesque landscapes. Little did we know that this hike would make us pass through green forests, breathtaking beaches and cliffs, and historical landmarks, leaving us with a renewed connection to Danish nature. The day couldn’t have been more perfect – the sun was shining, and the promise of some serious berry action was in the air. Join us as we recount the highlights of our 23 kilometer long hike.
Forest Abundance
Our hike began at Faxe Ladeplads train station, where we eagerly set foot towards the camping site and beach in Faxe Ladeplads. As we delved deeper into the largest forest in the area, known as Strandskoven, we were surrounded by a myriad of raspberries and blackberries. The Strandskoven Forest turned out to be a fruity paradise. Needless to say, we stopped too many times for snack breaks. But wait, there’s more! As we strolled along, we found plum and hazelnut trees, though they weren’t quite ripe yet. Later, as we wrote this blog post, we learned that these forests play a significant role in Vemmetofte’s economy, providing timber for furniture and construction. The forest surprised us with vast meadows full with Christmas trees, standing ready to the next Christmas time to introduce cozy holiday vibes.
A slight detour for birdwatching
Magnificent Danish Size Cliffs and Tranquil Beaches
As we hiked further, we wandered off the forest path towards Faxe Bugt (Bay), and we were treated to a stunning coastal view. The sight of the dazzling, fine sand, gentle ocean waves, and the calming breeze filled us with a sense of contentment. The area’s beauty also attracts various bird species, and we were fortunate to spot some unique ones like Scommon redshank, eider, and barnacle goose. Along the beach path, we admired the beeches and oaks hanging down the slopes, their shapes owing to the harsh coastal climate, protecting the trees further within the forest.
A Gloriuous Falcon
Returning to the lush green forest just before reaching Vemmetofte Strand Camping, we were once again tempted by blackberries and rasperies, diverting our attention from the trail. As we continued further, we even took a detour to a bird-watching station in a meadow, and there we met the “king” of the skies – a majestic falcon, soaring above us in the sky. Spending more than half an hour captivated by its grace, hunger finally nudged us onward, seeking a suitable spot for a well-deserved lunch break. The lunch was nothing fancy, just the usual sandwiches, but trust me, they tasted like Michelin-star meals in the outdoors.
The End of the World Pathway
Vemmetofte Kloster: A Place of Peace and History
Crossing Vemmetoftevej, we had a missed opportunity to buy fresh strawberries from locals selling them near a private house as we though we would buy some on the way back. Little did we know that these strawberries were sold like hot cakes. Moving on, we reached Vemmetofte Kloster, and there it felt like the stepping back in time. The monastery, open to the public during the day, had a beautiful garden and benches to relax and find peace close to nature. We also took a moment to stroll along the path known as “The End of the World,” which marked the boundary the convent nuns could venture beyond and symbolizing their commitment to a devoted Christian life.
A Proper Farewell
Right before we turned back to our starting point in Faxe Ledeplads, we encountered some hairy cows casually grazing along the linden pathway, seemingly unbothered by our presence. Finally, after traversing a total of 24 kilometers, incorporating berry snacking, bird-watching, and capturing breathtaking moments on camera, we reached our starting point at Faxe Ladelplads station. Though weary, our spirits remained high, thanks to the invigorating energy we got by the breathtaking sights of the coast, the forest and the meadows.
The Faxe Ledeplads to Vemmetofte hike offers an array of captivating experiences, from stunning beaches and sand dunes to mesmerizing forests and historical landmarks. Our hike through Strandskoven, Faxe Bugt, and Vemmetofte Kloster immersed us in the natural beauty of the region, leaving us with a profound appreciation for the Danish nature. We wholeheartedly encourage everyone to embark on their own adventure in that area, and reconnect with the outdoors.
